Happy Saturday!

I hope all of you are staying well.  We now have less than one month left of classes! On Monday we will take a break from regular lecture and do a group activity.  As such, Monday's lecture will not be recorded. On Wednesday we will start a unit on ion exchange. Following that we'll look briefly at absorption and then membrane processes. We'll finish with residual management.

Now here is a photo from the absolute coolest plant I've ever toured. The Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant is in Stockholm, Sweden and it is build within a mountain. Yes, totally carved out into a mountain. The workers use bicycles to get around the tunnels (which are about 9 km long).

Just a few reminders for the next two weeks:

Sunday 11/15: Participation Question is due at 11:59 pm

Monday 11/16: Office hours 4-5 pm (I added a link to the Zoom meeting in the main folder on LON-CAPA).

Tuesday 11/17 10:30-11:30 am: Danielle Yoon, Fishbeck Engineers: Financing Water and Wastewater Projects

Wednesday 11/18: Office hours 4-5 pm (I added a link to the Zoom meeting in the main folder on LON-CAPA).

Wednesday 11/18: Wastewater homework due at 11:59 pm

Sunday 11/22: Participation Question is due at 11:59 pm

Wednesday 11/25: Tutorial 3 due (you need to order kits by 11/16 if you wish to do AWWA Build A Tower competition). Details are in the Tutorial folder.

Please let me know if you need extensions on any of the due dates. As with the previous few assignments, a 72-hr grace period will be granted without any questions. Beyond that, just let me know and I'll work with you.

All the best,

Dr. Masten

Job opportunity: The State of Michigan has several (quite a few, actually) job openings for environmental and civil engineers. Several have closing dates in the next few days. Check out: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/michigan?keywords=environmental%20 and https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/michigan?keywords=civil%20engineer

Internship opportunity

Black and Veatch is starting the recruitment process for intern candidates for Black & Veatch’s Water Technology Group. The internship would be focused on drinking water treatment, but there’s always an opportunity to get them involved in both water and wastewater projects. Ideally, we’d like to find someone enrolled in the MS program or PhD program. We would greatly appreciate your recommendations for any students that are eager to learn and would be a good fit for consulting.

Here is a link to the open requisite. It notes Kansas City as the location, but with COVID-19 they are working remotely so an intern could be located outside of Kansas City. Email me if you would like additional information
