Happy Saturday! I hope you are all doing well on this gray and rainy Saturday (at least in mid-Michigan). Final mental health reminder to all: When things get frustrating and really difficult, be nice to yourself:    It doesn't seem possible that this semester is almost over. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you in subsequent classes and for those of you graduating - congratulations! If any of you have questions about the final project, please just email me. If needed, we can always set up a Zoom chat. I'll also be available at our regular office hours MW 4-5 pm. And a few final reminders: The last participation (extra credit) question is open until Dec 17 at 11:59 pm. Please complete it before then.  I've given everyone the 72 hr grace period for tutorial 4 and the tutorial extra credit. Please submit your work before Monday Dec. 14 at 11:59 pm. Mini-design 3 is due on December 17 at 11:59 pm. If you need a bit of extra time (up to 24 hrs), please let me k...

Happy Sunday (even though it is almost over, and for some of you it is already Monday)! I hope you are all doing well and St. Nicholas left some treats in your shoes (yes, that really is a tradition in some countries).  And for those of you celebrating Hanukkah, happy Hanukkah! The participation question was due on Sunday night - if you forgot, just send me an email and I will reopen it. On Monday we will continue the unit on residual management (which we will likely finish on Wednesday). On Tuesday, Chloe Grabowski, Assistant Project Manager with HDR, will speak with us from Missoula, MT about the treatment of mining wastes. We'll meet with her from 10:30-11:30 am (Michigan time). Chloe is a 2012 ENE graduate. On Friday, we will have our last lecture of the semester. Scott Devries, City Engineer for Williamston, MI will speak with us about a recent study completed on their plant to consider various options for the much-needed expansion. Most of the grades have been posted (e...

Happy Sunday! I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I will admit, it was nice to have a few days off. It was also great to view your video presentations of the water tower, the history of water treatment/distribution, and the lead and copper rule. The highlight was seeing many of you. It made me realize how much I miss being in the classroom (not that I really needed a reminder, but this really hit home!) Oh and learning about qanats (which I will admit I knew little about)! https://www.persiantouring.com/things-to-do/the-persian-qanat/   On Monday we will start a two-lecture unit on membrane filtration. On Friday, we'll start the last unit on residual management. The homework assignments on ion exchange and membrane filtration are open and are due on December 9th at 11:59 pm. There will not be any homework assignment on residual management, although you will need to address residual management in MiniDesign 3. On Tuesday, Dr. Huiyun Wu (MSU grad) will speak with ...

Internships and Job opportunities

Grad assistantship opportunity (MSU):  We are interested in hiring four graduate student assistants to collect wastewater samples to monitor the prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This work is planned to be completed by two teams of two individuals. Work will be conducted primarily outdoors, potentially during inclement weather. Specific work tasks include: Prepare composite samplers for wastewater sample collection (lift sampler from sewer, set programming, pack sampler with ice, and reinstall); collect samples from composite samplers (lift samplers from sewer, retrieve sample container, replace with clean sample container, and reinstall sampler); deliver wastewater samples to laboratory; inspect composite samplers to ensure proper operation and conduct routine maintenance (e.g. replace sample tubing); follow standard operating procedures to ensure work complies with safety and laboratory guidance. This work will take place according to a pre-existing schedule whic...

Happy Saturday! I hope all of you are staying well.  We now have less than one month left of classes! On Monday we will take a break from regular lecture and do a group activity.  As such, Monday's lecture will not be recorded. On Wednesday we will start a unit on ion exchange. Following that we'll look briefly at absorption and then membrane processes. We'll finish with residual management. Now here is a photo from the absolute coolest plant I've ever toured. The Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant is in Stockholm, Sweden and it is build within a mountain. Yes, totally carved out into a mountain. The workers use bicycles to get around the tunnels (which are about 9 km long). Just a few reminders for the next two weeks: Sunday 11/15: Participation Question is due at 11:59 pm Monday 11/16: Office hours 4-5 pm (I added a link to the Zoom meeting in the main folder on LON-CAPA). Tuesday 11/17 10:30-11:30 am : Danielle Yoon, Fishbeck Engineers: Financing Water and Was...

Hi all, I know I'm late sending this out and I apologize. I know it's been a long week, especially with assignments/projects due in ENE 480, 481, 483 and whatever other classes you may have. Hopefully, the grace periods have been helpful and alleviated at least some of the stress.  This week we will study adsorption processes. I just posted the notes. I apologize for the delay.  I also posted the reading on wastewater treatment from Principles of Environmental Engineering and Science (4th ed., Masten and Davis) in a folder on LON-CAPA called Supplemental Readings.  Don't forget to answer the participation question for this past weekend. Because of all the work that you have due, I set the question to close on Monday at 11:59 pm.  On Tuesday, our guest speaker will be Bryan Townsend from Black and Veatch Engineering.  Bryan will speak on UV disinfection in water treatment.  The assignment on disinfection is due on Wednesday at 11:59 pm. However, if you...
