Welcome #1

Greetings and welcome to ENE 483,

I hope all of you are well and enjoying your summer. I am looking forward to being back in the "classroom" this fall, although the "classroom" will be very different. In order to ensure that all who are registered for ENE 483 can complete the course irrespective of where you are, the course will be run differently in the past. At this point in time, I plan to record and post short lectures that are more theory-focused. I will use some of the pre-recorded lectures that accompany the textbook and go through example problems.  We will meet during the regular class times for group discussions, problem-solving, etc. These will also be recorded and posted online. I've also been working with faculty across the US to develop a course that provides you with as close to the usual experience as possible. There will be field trips, but they will be virtual. The cool part is we're not geographically limited and could potentially tour plants anywhere in the world. We'll still have guest lecturers as in the past, but they too can be from anywhere in the world, and will likely be. There will still be demonstrations of key concepts, but those will be pre-recorded.

We'll still do the design project as in the past. There will be homework (yes, for those of you that have had me as an instructor - it will be in LON-CAPA) assignments, where you will be able to master the course material.  And there will be no exams! It worked fine in ENE 489 after we went to remote learning, so I believe it will work in ENE 483. Please recognize that this is the plan as of today, but that things could change depending on how the COVID situation evolves.

The textbook is available electronically through MSU Libraries so there is no need to purchase that unless you want a hard copy (which some students find very useful).

As the summer progresses, I will provide you with more information about the course. In the meantime, feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and stay well,

Dr. Masten
