First week announcements 

Greetings,

I hope all of you had a good first half-week of classes.  I re-recorded this morning's lecture and have posted it both on YouTube and in my Google drive. Links are on LON-CAPA.  

The participation question opened on Friday morning and you have until Sunday at 11:59 pm to submit your answer. As always, if you don't want to answer the question, feel free to tell me whatever you wish. We can even commiserate together than the MSU Dairy Store is closing on Sept. 14th (temporarily, thankfully) until the economic situation improves. Yes, we did get some ice cream and cheese to tide us over for a while. 

We will have tutorial class on Tuesday at 10:20 am. I'll finish the lecture on Water Plant Design Considerations and we'll continue the example regarding Brighton, MI.  Please review the Design Process lecture (link is posted on LON-CAPA). 

I ordered the new practice exam for the CE and ENE exams and once I receive that, I'll finish the FE Exam Preparation Seminar, which I'll give during one of the tutorial sessions this month. Details soon.

Homework #1 is open and due on September 14 at 11:59 pm. 

To access the 2020 edition of the Davis textbook, click on the 2010 internet version on the MSU Library system, it will take you to 2020 edition. There is also a direct link in the syllabus. If you're having trouble, please let me know.  I made this video to help you navigate the Library system. 


I've assigned students to teams. The list is in the Design Project folder along with the first assignment write-up.

Happy Saturday! I hope all of you are staying well.  We now have less than one month left of classes! On Monday we will take a break from regular lecture and do a group activity.  As such, Monday's lecture will not be recorded. On Wednesday we will start a unit on ion exchange. Following that we'll look briefly at absorption and then membrane processes. We'll finish with residual management. Now here is a photo from the absolute coolest plant I've ever toured. The Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant is in Stockholm, Sweden and it is build within a mountain. Yes, totally carved out into a mountain. The workers use bicycles to get around the tunnels (which are about 9 km long). Happy Sunday, Well we don't have a blue sky today, but at least it isn't raining (now)! As we move into several units (sedimentation and granular media filtration) that are based on fluid mechanics, I thought I'd give you this bit of information I gleaned this morning from colleagues on Twitter and how prairie dog burrows are better ventilated than most classrooms . I posted a handout in the Lecture (powerpoint) folder on LON-CAPA. We'll work through this problem either Monday or Wednesday. On Tuesday, Paul Larios, MSU CEE alum will speak to us during the tutorial.  We'll start his lecture at 10:30 am.  He will speak about Water Resources Engineering in the Hudson Valley, NY. and will discuss four recent WTP/WWTP jobs he has worked on. Happy Monday! I just realized that I did not send out my weekly message this weekend. Where did the weekend go?  As usual, here are the weekly reminders: Sunday 11/22: Participation question is due at 11:59 pm. However, because I forgot to send out the weekly reminder, I'll reset it to Monday 11/23 at 11:59 pm. I'm looking forward to reading everyone responses. Monday 11/23:   We'll continue ion exchange with an example design. Office hours 4-5 pm (link to the Zoom meeting is in the main folder on LON-CAPA). Tuesday 11/24: 10:30-11:30 am  Gary Hunter, Black and Veatch will speak on UV disinfection in wastewater Wednesday 11/25:  We will start a short unit on absorption.
