Week 8 Participation Question and Weekly Message
Happy Week 8! I hope you are all doing well!
Participation Week 8 question is due on Sunday at 11:59 pm.
We will finish disinfection on Monday and begin a short unit on distribution systems and corrosion control.
On Tuesday, our guest speaker will be Thomas Silsby, Superintendent and Chief Operator of the MSU Water Treatment Plant. He will take us on a virtual tour of the plant. As a prelude to this, I will post a lecture on arsenic, iron, and manganese removal. Class will begin at 10:30 am for the tour.
On Wednesday, the filtration assignment and tutorial 2 (scavenger hunt of green infrastructure) are due at 11:59 pm. I hope some of you are enjoying the beautiful weather to complete the scavenger hunt. Again, if you are not living in the area, you can complete the scavenger hunt online using Google satellite or street view or using the links provided. If you want to explore your own area, let me know and I'll work with you.
On Friday, we will begin the unit on wastewater treatment.
MiniDesign 2 has been posted and is due November 4. There will be no other assignment due that week.

Week 8 Participation
This is one of my absolute favorite hymns:
It is one that calls us to be one global community, recognizing that each of us is unique in where we come from, in our dreams and hopes, and that we all are valued and loved. That the same sun shines in all our lands, the same rain falls from the sky, and the sky is as blue across the globe.
I've lived now on three continents (North America, Europe, and Oceania) and in five countries (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland). I grew up in New Jersey, just outside of New York city. Most people think of it as just a concrete jungle, but there are trees, parks, lakes, and the Palisades, which are a really cool geological formation along the Hudson River. I grew up riding my bike, going camping and hiking (in part because we were too poor to stay in hotels) during the summer, and sledding and ice skating in winter. I'll post some photos of where I'm from on the blog.
Tell me something about where you are from, whether it be in Michigan or across the globe. Feel free to share something about your home and/or a photo on the blog if you wish.
(As with all participation questions, if you do not wish to answer, feel free to tell me anything - your favorite food, your pet's name, etc.)
And as I promised... some photos from where I grew up. And because taking photos was expensive and much more time-consuming, most of the photos I have are from holidays or vacations. No digital photos back then.

To some of you I mentioned spending summers on my uncle's dairy farm in New York State. Here's my sister and I with my Uncle Walt on his tractor.

Another Easter Sunday - I think I was in 6th grade. And yes, we all had to get new clothes for Easter (and Christmas). It and the start of school were when we got new clothes.

My sister's First Communion. With my brother and my grandmother.
I mentioned the Palisades to some of you. These are the Palisades on the NJ side of the Hudson River. We used to hike often in the park.
George Washington Bridge, photo taken from the same park as the photo of the Palisades. I've run across this bridge numerous times with my niece.
Bear Mountain, NY - near where we used to hike and camp as kids.
