Weekly message 10/30/2020

 

Happy Friday!

I know that life feels really hard right now - but remember, this to will end. In a few weeks, the semester will be over, the exam that you have been stressing over will be done, the chapter finished, and the book closed. In the end, it won't seem to matter.


But what matters most is your health and well-being.  As such, I am going to try something I haven't done before and that is to set a 3-day grace period for both Assignment 3 in ENE 480 and MiniDesign 2 in ENE 483. The due dates won't officially change, but if you need extra time, you can have an additional 72 hrs, no questions asked. If you need more, just let me know.

So here are the due dates:

  • ENE 480 Assignment 3: Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 11:59 pm (grace period ends Nov. 8 at 11:59 pm)
  • ENE 483 MiniDesign 2: Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020 at 11:59 pm (grace period ends Nov. 7 at 11:59 pm). 

I hope this alleviates some of the stress. 

And Happy November 1st!  Where did the year go? It's 5/6 finished!  I'm sure we'll all be happy to bid 2020 goodbye!

This week I will continue lecturing on wastewater treatment. One goofy thing (I wish there were only one) with Zoom is when I play videos I have to set the sound to be through the computer. That means that if you respond or ask questions, I cannot hear you.  As such, we'll need to rely on chat when I'm showing videos - but I believe the videos give you a better sense of the unit processes. 

On Tuesday, Mike Ellis (BS CE 2009 - MSU) from Barr Engineering will speak with us about PFAS chemicals and work being done to remediate these "forever" chemicals. I'm sure he will also share his experiences post graduation.

Happy Saturday! I hope all of you are staying well.  We now have less than one month left of classes! On Monday we will take a break from regular lecture and do a group activity.  As such, Monday's lecture will not be recorded. On Wednesday we will start a unit on ion exchange. Following that we'll look briefly at absorption and then membrane processes. We'll finish with residual management. Now here is a photo from the absolute coolest plant I've ever toured. The Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant is in Stockholm, Sweden and it is build within a mountain. Yes, totally carved out into a mountain. The workers use bicycles to get around the tunnels (which are about 9 km long). Happy Sunday, Well we don't have a blue sky today, but at least it isn't raining (now)! As we move into several units (sedimentation and granular media filtration) that are based on fluid mechanics, I thought I'd give you this bit of information I gleaned this morning from colleagues on Twitter and how prairie dog burrows are better ventilated than most classrooms . Happy Monday! I just realized that I did not send out my weekly message this weekend. Where did the weekend go?  As usual, here are the weekly reminders: Sunday 11/22: Participation question is due at 11:59 pm. However, because I forgot to send out the weekly reminder, I'll reset it to Monday 11/23 at 11:59 pm. I'm looking forward to reading everyone responses.
