Happy Sunday!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I will admit, it was nice to have a few days off. It was also great to view your video presentations of the water tower, the history of water treatment/distribution, and the lead and copper rule. The highlight was seeing many of you. It made me realize how much I miss being in the classroom (not that I really needed a reminder, but this really hit home!) Oh and learning about qanats (which I will admit I knew little about)!

On Monday we will start a two-lecture unit on membrane filtration. On Friday, we'll start the last unit on residual management. The homework assignments on ion exchange and membrane filtration are open and are due on December 9th at 11:59 pm. There will not be any homework assignment on residual management, although you will need to address residual management in MiniDesign 3.

On Tuesday, Dr. Huiyun Wu (MSU grad) will speak with us about wastewater-based epidemiology.  RNA markers in wastewater are being used to try to detect outbreaks of COVID-19 before they become critical. Australia is using this extensively to develop policy as are a number of other countries and US States. I'm sure you will find Dr. Wu's work very interesting. As usual, I will record the lecture.

On Wednesday, the activated carbon/sorption homework is due. If you need the 72-hr grace period, just let me know.

I'll open the next participation question on Friday morning and it will be due Sunday December 7th at 11:59 pm.

Finally, I've posted MiniDesign 3 assignment and the grading rubric.

And don't forget to check out the jobs/internship post on the course blog.

All the best,

Dr. Masten
